Douglas Noel Adams, the renowned British writer best known for his hilarious and thought-provoking science fiction series "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," has died at the age of 49. Adams passed away on May 11, 2001, due to a heart attack while attending a dinner party in Santa Barbara, California.

Adams's literary career began with his contributions to the BBC's iconic science fiction television series "Doctor Who." In the early 1970s, he wrote several episodes, including "The Pirate Planet" and "The Sun Makers." It was during this time that Adams conceived the idea for "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," which would go on to become his most famous and beloved work.
